The real question with iOS 27 isn’t “what are the new features?” It’s “is Siri finally competitive?” After years of falling behind rival assistants, Apple is betting everything on Apple Intelligence to change the conversation.
A Siri That Can Actually Hold a Conversation
The most significant overhaul in iOS 27 is Siri. The assistant now exists as a standalone app — independent of the side button trigger — and integrates Apple Intelligence natively. What that means in practice: Siri can hold multi-turn conversations without losing context, understand and interact with what’s on the screen, access personal data (messages, email, calendar, photos) to answer specific questions, and take actions within third-party apps.
That last point is the most anticipated. Being able to tell Siri to “reply to this email saying I’ll be late” and have it actually work — without manually opening the app — is the use case Apple’s ecosystem has been promising for years.
The Performance Numbers
Beyond Siri, iOS 27 delivers measurable gains:
- Third-party apps: 30% faster to launch
- Photos: 70% faster for searching and loading large libraries
- AirDrop: 80% faster transfer speeds
These gains come from system-level optimizations, not hardware changes. That matters: they apply across all iOS 27-compatible devices, not just the latest iPhones.
Spatial Reframing and Extend in Photos
The Photos app receives two Apple Intelligence-powered features. “Spatial Reframing” lets you reframe any photo in spatial format (for Vision Pro), generating missing areas through inpainting. “Extend” does something similar for standard photos: enlarging the frame by generating missing edges.
Both features use on-device image generation — no photo data sent to the cloud. That’s been Apple Intelligence’s promise from the start: on-device processing by default, cloud only when genuinely necessary.
Safari also gains automatic tab organization by theme — a long-overdue feature for anyone who accumulates dozens of open tabs.
The Caveat Worth Keeping
iOS 27 officially launches in autumn 2026. This public beta is a work in progress — bugs exist, some Apple Intelligence features aren’t yet available in all languages, and behaviors can change before release. What the beta shows is the direction, not the finished product.
On Siri specifically: the demos work. The real measure of success will come in six months, when users have tested it in actual daily use — not in optimal demo conditions.
