Finding dual-battery code in iOS 27 isn’t confirmation that a dual-battery iPhone is coming this year, but it’s a strong signal that Apple has at least prototyped the concept and is building the OS-level scaffolding to support it.

Why dual-battery architecture matters

The obvious answer is battery life — more cells mean more capacity. But the more interesting reason is power management. A dual-battery design allows the device to manage power draw across different cells: one cell could handle intensive tasks while another maintains baseline operations, or the system could draw from one cell while the other charges wirelessly.

For iPhone specifically, this could address one of the persistent criticisms of the Pro line: that battery life, while improved over previous generations, still falls short of what comparably-specced Android flagships deliver. A dual-battery architecture is one engineering path to closing that gap without increasing the device’s physical footprint — or accepting the thermal cost of a single larger cell.
