Creating a dedicated division isn’t launching a product. It’s a signal that something stopped being a side project and became a core bet.
Samsung Electronics has officially launched RX, a standalone division focused entirely on robotics, with the stated goal of accelerating humanoid hardware development. The decision to structure this as its own business unit — rather than distribute it across existing R&D departments — is a meaningful organizational declaration.
What RX Means for Samsung Specifically
Samsung is one of the few companies in the world that simultaneously controls capabilities in semiconductors, displays, connectivity, and consumer electronics. Humanoid robotics needs all of that — chips for real-time processing, optical sensors for perception, precision actuators, and embedded operating systems to coordinate everything.
In launching RX, Samsung isn’t building robots from scratch from a blank page. The company is attempting to vertically integrate capabilities it already owns across disparate business units. That’s a strategic assembly play as much as an invention play.
A Race That Just Got Serious
The competitive context matters here. Figure AI, Agility Robotics, Boston Dynamics (owned by Hyundai), Tesla Optimus, and multiple Chinese startups are all pushing aggressively in the humanoid segment. By 2026, the market has shifted from laboratory curiosity to a real industrial race, with logistics, manufacturing, and domestic applications all in play.
Samsung enters this race with obvious advantages — scale, supply chain, patents, distribution. The handicap is real too: the most advanced players have years of integrated robotics experience that Samsung doesn’t yet have.
Physical AI
The language Samsung is using around RX — “Physical AI” — is worth noting. It distinguishes AI that processes information (what LLMs do) from AI that acts in the physical world (what robots do). That framing reflects an ambition: Samsung doesn’t just want to sell chips for other companies’ robots. It wants to build its own.
If RX delivers commercial products in the next 3–5 years, the business impact could be significant. Industrial robotics markets are worth hundreds of billions. Miss the window and the cost is also significant — which may be the main reason why RX is a full division rather than an internal project. Samsung’s organizational bet says more than any prototype could.
