Cutting half a product lineup sounds like a crisis. Viewed from inside a design studio, it might look like an opportunity.
Volkswagen Group has announced it will eliminate roughly half of its current models across its brands. The business reasoning is clear: too many models for a market that has changed around the group, excess manufacturing complexity, and a cost structure that needs realignment as the electric transition progresses more slowly than planned.
But here’s what the press releases don’t mention: design quality scales inversely with product volume. Fewer models means more attention per model. And attention is what makes the difference between a car that’s merely competent and one that people genuinely want.
The model proliferation problem
Volkswagen Group reached a point where it had seven or eight SUVs in similar price ranges across its brands, differentiated primarily by badge and minor specification variations. The design teams responsible for each had to create distinct visual identities for vehicles that shared platforms, powertrains, and substantially similar proportions.
That’s an almost impossible brief. How do you make an Audi Q4 look meaningfully different from a Volkswagen ID.4 when they’re built on the same MEB platform and occupy the same basic dimensional envelope? The answer, in practice, is that you don’t — not in any way that creates genuine emotional differentiation. You create surface variation and rely on the badge to do the positioning work.
What concentration allows
When a design team’s workload halves, each remaining project gets more iterations, more refinement cycles, more attention to the details that separate adequate from excellent.
The difference shows up in places buyers feel rather than consciously evaluate: the weight and sound of a door closing, the texture of the surface where your arm rests for hours on a long drive, the precision of the gap between two body panels. These aren’t specification items. They’re felt quality — and they require time that over-extended design teams don’t have.
Porsche provides the benchmark for what this can look like. The 911 has been refined across generations for over six decades. Its design team knows every surface, every proportion, every detail with an intimacy that comes from sustained attention to a relatively small number of products. The result is a vehicle where quality is perceptible in ways that $100,000 competitors can’t match.
The electric platform opportunity
The EV transition compounds the design opportunity. Without a combustion engine requiring a large front hood space, without a drive shaft running through the center of the vehicle, designers have genuine architectural freedom. The floor can be flat. The front compartment can be storage. Interior space can be configured in ways that internal combustion vehicles simply cannot accommodate.
The surviving VW Group models will largely be on electric platforms where this freedom exists. If the design teams can focus their now-concentrated attention on exploiting that freedom — rather than applying it piecemeal across 40 models — the resulting vehicles could be genuinely different from what came before.
The honest caveat
This is an opportunity, not a guarantee. Corporate restructuring generates organizational disruption that can damage design quality as much as enhance it. If talent leaves during the transition, or if management pressure focuses on cost reduction rather than quality improvement, the design dividend from model reduction won’t materialize.
What’s true is that the conditions for better design now exist at VW in a way they didn’t a year ago. Whether management uses those conditions well is the question.
